He had the crazy idea that he could be making beer as well. Back then, Iowa prohibited a person who worked at a winery to also work at a brewery. He teamed up with the mayor Newton at the time, Chaz Allen, to change that. Mason and Chaz went to the state capitol to talk with the legislature. This lead to passing of SF420 which allowed a person to work at both a brewery and a winery. This opened the way for Madhouse. The following year brought together a group of like-minded beer enthusiasts who wanted to expand local craft brew in central Iowa. These initial investors paved the way for the purchase of needed equipment. Shop was set up in the former Maytag Corp. buildings in Newton. American Wheat and Pastime Pale Ale were released.
